Blackwood And Glen Named Northern League Pitcher And Player Of The Week

July 26, 2010 - Northern League (NL) News Release

Second baseman Jacob Blackwood of the Kansas City T-Bones was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Gary SouthShore RailCats pitcher Willie Glen received the Northern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the period ending July 25th, 2010.

Blackwood, who leads the league with 53 RBI, batted .393 (11-for-28) with seven runs scored, two doubles, a league-high four home runs, and 10 RBI for the week. The highlight of the week was a two homer, five-RBI, 4-for-4 performance Friday night versus Rockford in the T-Bones 12-2 victory.

The 6-0, 210-pounder, is playing his fifth season of professional baseball and second with the T-Bones. He first signed with Kansas City on June 25th, 2009 and batted .288 over 63 games for K.C. in '09. In 2010, he has already eclipsed his previous single-season high of 10 home runs ('07 Greensboro - South Atlantic League) and is well on his way to establishing a new mark in RBI (had 78 RBI in '07). On the verge of a career-year offensively, the 24-year-old has excelled despite changing positions. He has started every game at second base this year after having played over 300 of his previous 373 games at third base entering the season (only six games at second base).

Blackwood was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft and played parts of four seasons in their organization (he was also drafted in the 40th round of the 2005 draft by the New York Mets, but did not sign). This marks the second time this season Blackwood has received the NL Player of the Week honor (May 31st).

Glen, the 2007 Northern League Pitcher of the Year and Gary SouthShore franchise all-time wins leader, went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA during the week for the RailCats. He hurled six-shutout innings on Friday versus the Lake County and pitched eight and a third innings yielding only one un-earned run on July 19th versus Fargo-Moorhead. In all, he pitched 14.1 innings, allowing only 11 hits while striking out 17. On the year, he leads the Northern League in strikeouts (66), ranks third in ERA (2.72), and is tied for sixth in wins (6).

Glen, who is in his second tour of duty with the RailCats, has a career record in Gary of 38-11 with a 3.15 ERA in the regular season. A three-time Northern League All- Star, Glen has ranked in the top six in the league in ERA twice in his previous three seasons and twice finished in the top three in the league in wins and strikeouts. Over his career, Glen has been perfect in the playoffs for the RailCats going 8-0 with a 1.54 ERA in nine postseason starts.

The 6-1, 185-pound right-hander, re-signed with Gary on February 20th, 2010. The native of Indianapolis, IN was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as a non-drafted free agent in 2001 after a standout career at the University of Evansville. Now playing in his tenth season of professional baseball, he has played with five different Major League organizations (Blue Jays, Phillies, Devil Rays, White Sox, and Marlins). This marks the second time this season Glen has received the NL Pitcher of the Week honor (June 28th).
