St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO-Mark Nussbeck was dominating and the offense jumped out early as St. Joe (18-18) cruised to an 8-3 win over St. Paul (21-15) in the series opener at Phil Welch Stadium. The ‘Snakes struck in the first and Nussbeck did not allow a baserunner until the sixth inning to win his fourth straight start.

Scooter Jordan doubled to lead off and after he was sacrificed to third, Wil Quintana scored him with a two-out single for a 1-0 lead. St. Joe never looked back adding two in the fourth and a pair more in the sixth on Mark Burke's first home run of the season. That made it 5-0.

The ‘Snakes made it 7-0 in the seventh with another two-run inning and, after St. Paul scored three against Nussbeck in the eighth, tacked on one more in the bottom of the eighth for the final 8-3 cushion.

Nussbeck (4-1) went a season-high eight innings and allowed just three hits and three runs while striking out a season-high 12. He retired the first 16 batters before Jeremy Frost singled with one out in the sixth. Just before the single, Nussbeck had struck out nine of ten batters.

St. Joe now has a .500 winning percentage for the first time since they were 1-1 and have won 13 of 15 games. They are just three games back of second-place St. Paul, with two more games in the series. Shingo Mitsumori (0-2) is scheduled to start Tuesday against the Saints' Justin Lord (5-0). Game time is 7:05pm with the gates opening at the ballpark at 6pm.
