Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford Ill. - Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard announced Wednesday that the Rockford IceHogs, members of the American Hockey League, have signed forwards Andrew Shaw and Rob Flick to one-year AHL contracts.
Shaw, 20, a fifth round (#139 overall) draft pick by Chicago, is the first of the Blackhawks draft picks from the 2011 NHL Entry Level Draft to sign a contract within the organization. The 5-11, 180-pound center spent the past three seasons playing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Last season he led the Owen Sound Attack with 135 penalty minutes and ranked fifth with 54 points (22g-32a). In 20 playoffs contests he had three multiple-goal games during the 2011 postseason, which included an appearance in the Memorial Cup Tournament.
The Belleville, Ont. native played his first two OHL campaigns with the Niagara Ice Dogs. During his three-year junior career, Shaw totaled 41g-66a-107pts with 361 PIMs in 190 games.
"We are very excited to add both Rob and Andrew to our team as they bring not only energy and passion, but are also young men of high character," said Bernard. "Both are coming off of great junior seasons culminating with both of their clubs playing in the Memorial Cup Tournament. Their high-energy and physical-style of play should prove them both to be fan favorites here at the MetroCentre."
Flick, 20, was drafted by the Blackhawks last year in the fourth round (#120 overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Level Draft. He spent all three seasons of his OHL career with the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. He finished fourth on the team with 57 points and led the Majors with 167 penalty minutes in 2010-11. During his time in juniors he compiled 99 points (46g-53a) in 181 games.
Flick and Shaw came head-to-head vying for a spot in the Memorial Cup Semifinals in May. Flick tallied the game-winning goal for the Majors in their 3-1 win over Owen Sound, while Shaw scored the lone goal for the Attack. Flick and the Majors made it to the Finals, but fell 3-1 to the Saint John Sea Dog's.
