Black Wolves Top Roughnecks 16-10
CALGARY - Stephan Leblanc led the way with nine points on three goals and six assists and Reilly O'Connor tied his career-high with four goals as the New England Black Wolves defeated the Calgary Roughnecks 16-10 on Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
O'Connor also had two assists in the win for New England (2-1) while Callum Crawford picked up eight points on two goals and six assists. In net, Doug Jamieson recorded his first career victory while also picking up a career-best 45 saves.
The Black Wolves opened up a 4-0 lead over the first six minutes of play, with goals from Seth Oakes, David Brock, O'Connor and Leblanc. Calgary (3-2) answered with a goal from Dane Dobbie with 4:24 remaining in the first, but Leblanc picked up his second of the night one minute and 27 seconds later to put New England back up by four. Former Roughneck Tyler Digby increased the Black Wolves' lead 58 seconds later and Dobbie scored again for Calgary as New England closed out the first with a 6-2 advantage.
Calgary picked up their third goal of the night just 1:15 into the second on a transition goal from Reece Callies. However, O'Connor found the back of the net on the power play with 9:32 remaining and JP Kealey picked up his first goal of the season a minute later to put the Black Wolves back up by five, 8-3, with 8:31 left in the frame. Dobbie scored to cut the lead down to four with 7:34 to play before Dereck Downs put New England back up by five, 9-4, to close out the first half.
Kealey scored his second of the night three minutes into the third and Crawford followed that up with his first of the game just 41 seconds later to give the Black Wolves a seven goal lead, 11-4, with 11:19 to play in the frame. Colton Watkinson found the back of the net in transition with a shorthanded goal with 8:04 remaining, but the Roughnecks went on a three goal in a three minute span to cut the lead to five, 12-7, with 2:50 to go in the quarter.
The Black Wolves answered with O'Connor's third of the night with just over two minutes remaining, but the Roughnecks closed out the frame with another tally from Dobbie with just 9.9 seconds to play to put the New England advantage at 13-8.
Calgary kept the momentum going on Ryan Martel's second of the night just 52 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Crawford took a pass from Leblanc just 38 seconds later and buried it and Digby found the back of the net 17 seconds after that to put the Black Wolves back up by six, 15-9, with 13:13 to play. O'Connor picked up his fourth of the night with 9:24 to play to make it 16-9. Calgary would score once more to close out the game.
Dobbie led the Roughnecks with seven points (four goals, three assists) while Martell and Chris Boushy each had two goals. Christian Del Bianco made 28 saves in the loss for Calgary.
The Black Wolves will return to action on Saturday, January 19 when they return home to take on the Georgia Swarm. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena. ?
