Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks picked up the fourth win in five tries during the longest homestand in over decade, blanking the Sioux Falls Stampede 3-0 at Young Arena Friday.
Eamon McAdam earned his first USHL shutout with 28 saves in the effort. Several of his nine third period stops came as the Hawks fended off a four-minute double-minor Stampede power play following a high sticking call against Kevin Duane. For the night, McAdam and the Hawks defense were five-for-five while penalty killing.
Waterloo's league-leading power play gave the home team the edge 13:35 into the first period. Vince Hinostroza blasted a shot toward the Stampede net; the initial chance didn't make it through, but the puck caromed to Kyle Schmidt who fired in his third goal of the season, all against the Stampede.
Another power play goal built the Hawks margin at 3:17 of the second period. Schmidt sneaked a pass across the top to the crease to John Wiitala, who scored his first USHL goal from a sharp angle. A successful penalty kill set up Waterloo's third goal. Back at even-strenghth after snuffing out a minor to Alec McCrea, Taylor Cammarata dropped a pass to Justin Kloos in the high slot. Minnesota's reigning Mr. Hockey Award winner send a low wrist shot past the glove side of Charlie Lindgren to make the game 3-0. Schmidt was credited with an assist on the tally, his third point of the night.
Players from both sides were bloodied in the middle frame as the result of scraps first between Ian McCoshen and Joe Schuldt then Pijus Rulevicius and Ian Mansfield. All of the pugilists returned to action.
The Black Hawks play the last of six-in-a-row at home Sunday, hosting the National Team Development Program for a 3:05 contest. It's Kids Day at the rink; children twelve and under will receive free admission with the purchase of a regularly priced adult ticket. To order, call the Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
