Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks announced plans today to honor the men and women serving our country overseas by wearing Armed Forces Appreciation uniforms during home games at Young Arena on November 19th and 20th.
The jerseys feature a dark, digital-style camouflage currently employed by the United States military, with black trim and red numbers. Also included on the shoulders is a patch with the logo of the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry of the Iowa Army National Guard, headquartered in Waterloo. Black Hawks fans will have the opportunity to purchase their favorite player's jersey at the end of the weekend. Funds raised from sales of the uniforms will benefit the Sullivan-Hartogh-Davis Post 730 Waterloo Honor Flight and Kandi's Kidz.
Commenting from western Canada where he is coaching the United States Junior Select Team at the World Junior A Challenge, Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley said it will be an honor to help recognize local heroes.
"The Black Hawks are proud of the opportunity to give back to hardworking military personnel," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "It is a wonderful reminder for our organization and players to keep the great men and women of the military and their missions overseas in the forefront of our thoughts, not only on Veteran's Day and next weekend, but at all times."
Tyson Fresh Meats of Waterloo has provided corporate backing for the jerseys, which will be auctioned off after Saturday's game against the Fargo Force. This will be the third consecutive year their partnership has supported the Black Hawks' effort to raise funds for local military, veteran, police, or fire fighter organizations.
The Sullivan-Hartogh-Davis Post 730 Waterloo Honor Flight is endeavoring to bring local World War II veterans to Washington next year in order to visit the National World War II Memorial.
Kandie's Kidz is an effort inspired by Kandi Vaughn - in memory of her son Travis who was killed in Afghanistan - in coordination with AMVETS Riders Post 49 and American Legion Auxiliary Action Unit 242. The project assists deployed soldiers' families with whatever needs they have on the home front so the troops can focus on their combat mission, helps local veterans readjust to life in their communities as they return from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and generates financial support for the special needs of a number of wounded soldiers and their families throughout northeast Iowa.
The Black Hawks faceoff against the Tri-City Storm Friday and against the Fargo Force Saturday at Young Arena. Both games begin at 7PM. For more information or tickets, call the Black Hawks box office at (319) 291-7680 or visit waterlooblackhawks.com.
