Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso: June 27, 2011: The Black Bears had shown flashes of brilliance earlier this summer. A pile of hits here. A flashy defensive play there. A hard-as-nails pitching performance. But they had yet to put all three together for the full nine innings.
That all changed with the team's 3-0 win over the Bend Elks as all three facets contributed to the victory. Grahamm Wiest (Cal St. Fullerton) went all nine innings, giving up no runs on three hits while striking out a trio of Elks. The complete game was the team's second, the first belonging to Stewart Fewel (LCC) in a game against the Bellingham Bells. That contest was also a three-hit shutout.
Spencer O'Neil (University of Oregon) paced the offense with an RBI double to open scoring in the first inning. He would add a second two-bagger in a two-for-four performance. Mitchell Walding (Philadelphia Phillies Draft Pick) turned in a handful of crisp plays at shortstop to go with his two singles and RBI while Beau Didier (LSU) reached base on a single and a walk.
Tomorrow at 6:35 pm the two teams go at it again on Azteca $2 Tuesday, where beer, soda, and hot dogs are all $2. The Black Bears will also recognize the men and women of our armed forces for Military Appreciation Night and Dog Tag Giveaway Night. The team additionally welcomes the high achievers of the Kelso Schools Honor Roll to the ballpark.
