WCL Cowlitz Black Bears

Black Bears Win 1-0

August 6, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Longview-Kelso: With a pitching staff thinning due to injuries, the time for a starter to shine was important. Matt Maurer (Pepperdine) responded with his best performance to date, going one out short of the complete game shutout while striking out nine and allowing only three hits-all by the same player. Richi Sandoval (New Mexico Highland) came on for the final out, a long fly ball to left field with the bases loaded.

Offense was in short supply, as Spencer O'Neil (NY Yankees Draft Pick) had both of the team's hits through the 7th inning. The 8th proved different as Kevin Schwartz (Pacific University) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and took third on a wild pitch. The Walla Walla Sweets brought the infield in looking to cut off a run at the plate, but Kirk Cunningham (LSU) hit a line drive past the shortstop for the RBI single and the only run of the game.

The two teams will go at it again tomorrow from Story Field at 6:35 pm on Applebee's Saturday at the Park. Dick Hannah Toyota will sponsor a T-Shirt Giveaway as the Black Bears will look to edge a game closer to the West Coast League playoffs. The season series finale on Sunday will be Elder Options Senior Sunday, with all seniors receiving a $2 discount on tickets and members of the Cold Stone Creamery Kids Club receiving free admission. Plus, kids can run the bases after the game.
