Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
A big night from Konnor Armijo (Santa Ana) was pivotal in the Cowlitz Black Bears 5-3 victory Thursday night over the Walla Walla Sweets.
With two outs and nobody on in the first inning, Brian Frattali (Portland) and Tyler Madrid (Santa Ana) hit base hits, setting the stage for a three-run home run by Armijo.
The Black Bears maintained their three-run lead until the sixth inning, when the Sweets hit a three-run homer of their own. It was the only blemish of the night for Black Bears starting pitcher Mikey Murray (Hawaii Pacific), who allowed just those three runs in six innings of work.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Black Bears again had no base runners and two outs before Armijo walked and went to second on a wild pitch. He then scored on a clutch RBI double by Cody Childs (Mt. Hood). Drew Luther (Fullerton College) then brought in Childs with a single.
Brian McAfee (Cornell) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Alec Cordova (Cal State Fullerton) held the Sweets at bay in the final two innings to record the save.
The Black Bears next home game is Friday, July 13 against the Kitsap Blue Jackets and it will be Azteca Fiesta Friday at Story Field. There will be a Kids Dash for Cash presented by Riverview Community Bank. Kids 12 and under will dash for cash on the field.
