Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso - Facing their second Portland team in as many days, the Cowlitz Black Bears took the field against the Portland Dukes on âApplebee's Saturday at the Park.' Stuart Fewel (LCC) took the hill for the Bears against Alex Bos for the Dukes.
Fewel struggled early, giving up three runs in the first frame highlighted by a two-run home run by designated hitter Scott Stone. The Bears countered with solo tallies in their halves of the 1st and 2nd innings.
After those bumps, Bos settled down and worked the corners of the strike zone to baffle the Bears hitters. A collision between Mychal Harrington (Mt. Hood CC) and Beau Didier (LSU) in the outfield left both players motionless on the ground. Didier recovered and went to the dugout but Harrington remained on the field until an ambulance arrived to take him away.
Assistant coach Josh Hogan took Didier's place in left field to face new pitcher Colt Carpenter. The change in pitcher was what the Bears needed, as they scored 4 in the 7th and 3 in the 8th to take an improbable 9-8 lead.
The Dukes managed to get the tying run over to third, but Christian Bannister (Mt. Hood CC) struck out Stephen Ossey to record his second save of the season.
Next, the Cowlitz Black Bears travel to square off in a three game series against the Kitsap Blue Jackets on Tuesday, June 7th, at 6:35. Their league home opener will be Friday, June 10th, at 6:35 against the Walla Walla Sweets. It will be another âLas Rocas Fabulous Friday' along with Budweiser Can Koozie Night where the first 100 adults will receive a can Koozie. After the game, it's Play Catch With Dad on the field.
