Black Bears Fall 2-1 to Corvallis
August 9, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Corvallis: August 8, 2011: In a virtual must-win game for the Cowlitz Black Bears, they turned to their ace, Jeff Gold (University of Oregon). The 6-game winner looked for his second victory over the Corvallis Knights, who had just clinched the top spot in the West Division with Cowlitz fighting for #2.
Gold went the distance, but two wild pitches shifted momentum. One allowed the runner to advance to scoring position and was driven in by the next batter while the other allowed a runner on third to score. Those two blemishes were all for Gold, whose performance was slightly outdone by his opposing counterparts.
Baserunners were hard to come by for both sides, as the teams combined for 12 hits. For the Black Bears, Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark St.) reached base on a walk and a fielder's choice with a run scored, and Mitchell Walding (St. Mary's of Stockton HS) had a hit and a walk to pace the offense. Kyle Garlick (University of Oregon) had a one-for-four night but drove in the lone run of the game.
The team returns to Story Field for the final game of the season on Wednesday, August 10th against the Corvallis Knights. The game should have playoff implications. It will be the final Burgerville Family Night, with 4 tickets, 4 sodas, and 4 hot dogs for only $28. It will also be Fan Appreciation Night, with tons of big-ticket prizes (such as a gas grill or a fishing trip) given away all game long.
