Kelowna Falcons Earn Comeback Win

August 9, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Kelowna Falcons News Release

For the second time in three nights the Kelowna Falcons showed some late inning magic as they beat the Bellingham Bells 4-3 in 10 innings to open the final series of the summer.

In the bottom of the third inning the Falcons would strike first on a two run single from Beau Hanowski, who records his 10th RBI of the year. Jeff Melby and Victor Rasor-Thompson would score.

The 2-0 lead looked like it would be all the scoring Falcons' starter Ethan Miller would need. In his final appearance of the summer Miller got stronger as the game went on, at one point retiring 10 Bells in a row.

In the eighth the Bells would get to Miller and score three times highlighted by a bases clearing single by Derek Atkinson. Two of the three runs were earned, while the third scored on a throwing error.

The Bells took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth were the Falcons began a rally. Ben Swinford would lead off the inning with double. After a hit batter and a sac bunt, he would score on a wild pitch to tie the game. The Falcons would load the bases after that with only one out but couldn't score.

Extra innings would be needed and the Falcons would win it in the bottom of the 10th. After Cade Bowen gave the Falcons 2.2 perfect innings, Nick Colwell would hit a ground rule double to lead off the 10th. He would move to third on a sac bunt ahead of Swinford. On the first pitch he saw Swinford laced a ball into left field that would score Colwell with the game winner. Swinford would finish 4-5, scored the tying run after a lead-off double in the ninth and then recorded the game winning hit in the 10th.

With the win the Falcons officially eliminate the Bells from playoff contention.

The Falcons and Bells will continue their final series of the summer on Tuesday night at 6:35pm in the second last game of the year. It's also a Toonie Tuesday as all tickets are just $2.00. Brandon Marris is the scheduled starter. In his last start Marris threw a complete game two-hit shutout on Friday. Catch the game live on AM 1150 with Ryan Watters.
