Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Kitsap: June 1, 2012: Playing under ominous skies that were a harbinger of their on-field fate, The Cowlitz Black Bears lost a back-and-forth season opener to the Kitsap Blue Jackets by a final score of 8-7. A ninth inning two-run home run by Konnor Armijo (Santa Ana) provided some late fireworks but ultimately Jared Gaynor completed the save for Kitsap.
The Black Bears got off to a fast start with a first-inning rally that was capped by a two-run single by Kyle Kuck (Santa Ana), who ended the game with four RBI's. However, the Blue Jackets answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take the lead. With the game tied at five, Kitsap pulled ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run triple from Allen Hewey and an RBI single by Dallas Hessler.
Manager Tim Matz used this game to work out several pitchers. Leko Galusha got the start and pitched two solid innings before running into trouble in the third. Alec Cordova then took over and was effective, extricating the team from a bases loaded no out jam and allowing only one run in three innings. Zev Egli gave up three runs in two innings and Kody Watts pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Black Bears complete their three-game series with Kitsap on Friday and Saturday before returning to Longview to take on the Portland Ports on Tuesday, June 5 in the squad's home opener presented by Longview Fibre Paper & Packaging. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a magnetic schedule presented by Three Rivers Mall. A post game firework display will light up the night sky.
