Longview: The Cowlitz Black Bears took advantage of two big innings and excellent pitching to defeat the Portland Lobos 9-1 Thursday night at Story Field.
Nick Richardson (UC Santa Barbara) got the start and struck out four hitters in three innings. He allowed one unearned and did not yield a hit. Mitchell Tripp came on in relief and got the win with two scoreless innings. Brian McAfee (Cornell), Ian Ekery (Central Arizona), Alec Cordova (Cal State Fullerton), and Ryan McCarthy (Rice) all pitched a scoreless inning as well.
The Black Bears broke through with four runs in the third inning. Tyler Madrid (Santa Ana) had an RBI single and Ben Swinford (Cornell) brought in a pair of runs with a single of his own.
Four more runs crossed the plate in the seventh, two on a dropped third strike and another two on a single by Austin Wobrock (Orange Coast). Nick Paxton (Mt. Hood) had an RBI single in the eighth for the team's final run.
The Black Bears next home game is Friday, July 27 and it will be Azteca Fiesta Friday Night. It was originally Pepsi New Product Reveal Night but that has been moved to Monday July 30.
