Black Bears Bats Ignite In Front of Nearly 1300

June 26, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Longview-Kelso: It was a night for the offense to pick up where the pitching faltered. Trent Zaks (UC Irvine), 0-for-21 at the plate coming into the contest, got in on the action with a two-for-four performance to break his hitless streak with the team as they won 12-8.

The major firepower came from Cody Webster (Cal St. Fullerton), whose two-run home run in the 5th inning scored Zaks and tied him at one with Kyle Garlick (University of Oregon) for most home runs on the team. Batting in the leadoff spot, Brent Graham (LCC) reached base four times on three walks and a single and stole two bases. Brett Thomas (University of Oregon) pitched in as he went one-for-two, walked, and scored twice.

Lost in the offensive outpouring was a quality start from Porter Clayton (University of Oregon). In his third start the southpaw pitched six innings, giving up just three runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. The score was a lopsided 12-3 mark in favor of Cowlitz heading into the top of the 7th, but Kelowna made it a game by scoring five runs and forcing the Black Bears to use three pitchers in the frame.

The Bend Elks come to town Monday through Wednesday to face the red-hot Black Bears at Story Field. Monday is Kids Eat Free night. All youngsters 14 and under will receive a free hot dog, soda, and chips. Kids will also get the chance to run the bases after the game. The team will recognize area Boy Scout troops and all scouts will receive a commemorative patch.
