Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Walla Walla Sweets continue to prepare their roster for the 2013 season of West Coast League baseball. This week the team announced the signing of North Dakota State infielder John Skrbec and New Mexico State outfielder Mike Paulson. Both players will join the Sweets for its fourth season of WCL baseball, slated to begin the first week of June 2013.
Skrbec, a native of Grand Rapids, Minn., and a graduate of Grand Rapids High School, is a 6-foot 1-inch, 185-pound sophomore on the NDSU Bison team. As a senior at Grand Rapids High School, Skrbec was a finalist for the "Mr. Baseball" award in Minnesota and played in the Lions All-Star Series. From 2007 to 2009 he led the Grand Rapids American Legion team to state tournament appearances, and in 2008 drove in the only run in the Class 3A state quarterfinals which helped his team to a third-place finish for the Thunderhawks. Last season Skrbec sat out the entire Bison season as a redshirt.
"We think that John will be a good fit for the Sweets," said Sweets general manager, Zachary Fraser. "He comes from a great baseball program at North Dakota state and we expect him to be a positive addition to the roster and the community."
Paulson, the 6-foot, 205-pound outfielder is a junior for the New Mexico State Aggies, and a native of Sammamish, Wash. A graduate of Issaquah High School, Paulson played baseball for the Walla Walla Community College Warriors for two seasons before transferring to New Mexico State. In 2012 as a member of the Warriors, he hit .333 with two RBI, in just 12 at-bats. Paulson hit .414 with five doubles and 11 RBI in 58 at-bats. As a pitcher he was 2-2 with one save and a 3.37 ERA over 18.2 innings of work.
"Mike is a good left-handed hitting outfielder who could also contribute at first base," said Sweets manager J.C. Biagi. "I was fortunate to work with him quite a bit in his time at Walla Walla (CC) and believe we'll see an even better guy after his first year at New Mexico State."
Skrbec and the Bison open their college season on February 15 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Paulson and the Aggies will also open on February 15 at home against UW-Milwaukee. The Sweets Opening Day presented by Northwestern Mutual is scheduled for June 5 at 7:05 P.M. at Borleske Stadium. The Sweets will welcome the Bend Elks to town for a three game series to open the 2013 season. To view a complete schedule, visit wallawallasweets.com .
