Bismarck Bucks Throttle Barnstormers
The Bismarck Bucks had a dominant outing at home in the team's second matchup of the season against the Iowa Barnstormers. Bismarck came out with a chip on their shoulder after a poor outing against the Sioux Falls Storm last week. Week 8 of the IFL season at the Bismarck Event Center was dominated defensively by Bismarck and ended with a 55-22 final score in favor of the Bucks.
Bismarck's defensive struggles from last week's game were virtually non-existent tonight. The Barnstormers found little success on the ground and in the read option, something the Bucks struggled to contain last week. Iowa was held scoreless through the 1st quarter and found the endzone early in the 2nd with a 24-yard touchdown catch from Neal to Hollenbeck. They scored again before half on an Evan Owens rush from 6 yards out. The Barnstormer offense was then held scoreless until less than 2 minutes to go in the game on a 33-yard touchdown catch from Espinoza to Bell.
Early offensive success from the Bucks played a toll as they scored 20 points in the 1st quarter alone. Justin Rankin had two rushing touchdowns in the first from 18 and 24 yards out. The third score came on a JT Stokes sweep from inside the 10 yard-line. Mike Carrigan took a kick return 50 yards to the house for the Bucks fourth touchdown of the first half. Iowa had a great kick that was tough to recover in the endzone, but Carrigan secured it and took it the distance.
The 2nd half of play was all Bismarck. The Barnstormers were held scoreless in the 2nd half other than on a meaningless score with under two minutes to go. One Barnstormer drive was derailed by four offensive penalties in a row that had them trapped at their 1 yard-line. The fourth penalty resulted in a safety on a holding call in the endzone. QB Richie Stammetti came in at half for the Bucks and threw two touchdowns to JT Stokes who had three total scores on the day.
Special teams play by the Bucks contributed greatly this week. Cody Barber had three solid kickoffs that were mishandled by Iowa and resulted in them starting their drives from inside their 5 yard-line.
Bismarck came out on top in Week 8 of the IFL season. The Bucks defense dominated holding the Barnstormers to only three scores on the day. Bismarck bounced back after last week's loss and grounded the Barnstormers. Bucks win 55-22.Â
