Montgomery Biscuits News Release
KODAK, Ten. - The Biscuits (2-3) departed Tennessee with an impressive 10-5 win against the Smokies (4-1) in Sunday afternoon's series finale at Smokies Stadium.
Caleb Sampen made his Double-A debut, starting on the mound for the Biscuits, and the right-hander looked sharp early, tossing three shutout innings to begin the contest. The right-hander then got some help from Moises Gomez who crushed his second Double-A home run to center field to make it 1-0 Biscuits.
Montgomery would add to their lead in the second inning against Tennessee starter Luis Lugo with a double-steal attempt in which Cal Stevenson swiped home. Then in the fourth inning, Rene Pinto would add an RBI-double, and Seaver Whalen a sacrifice fly, to make it 4-0. Whalen has knocked in at least one run in each of his first three Double-A games.
The Smokies would answer back in the fourth with a sac fly from Tyler Payne as well as an RBI-single from Levi Jordan off Sampen to cut the deficit in half to 4-2. But Pinto would add another RBI, this one on a single in the top of the sixth, to extend the lead to three before Vance Vizcaino's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth made it a 5-4 game.
The Biscuits would blow it wide open in the ninth thanks to a two-run single by Michael Smith, a two-run triple by Miles Mastrobuoni, and an RBI-double by Dillon Paulson, the first Double-A hit for the first baseman. The Smokies added one in the ninth off Ivan Pelaez, but the southpaw would ring up Christian Donahue to end the game.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for the first time since 2019 with a six-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Opening Night presented by Chick-fil-A with a MAX Fireworks Show on Tuesday, May 11.
The rest of the series will include Military Wednesday presented by WOW!
