Montgomery Biscuits News Release
KODAK, Ten. - A ninth-inning comeback fell just short as the Biscuits (1-1) fell to the Tennessee Smokies (1-1), 6-4, on Thursday night at Smokies Stadium. The loss snapped the Biscuits' nine-game winning streak against Tennessee, dating back to July of 2019.
Tommy Romero got the ball for the Biscuits and made his second Double-A start-and first one since 2019-a good one. The 23-year-old got in some trouble in the first inning, serving up an RBI-double to Miguel Amaya to make it 1-0 Smokies, but then rebounded by retiring the next 11 batters he faced. Romero finished going four innings and allowing just the one hit and the one run along with four strikeouts and a walk.
The Biscuits would tie the game in the third thanks to Miles Mastrobuoni's missile of an RBI-double to center off Smokies starter Matt Swarmer. The Smokies then retook the lead on Amaya's two-out RBI-single off Faustino Carrera and made it a 2-1 ballgame.
The Biscuits would battle back in the seventh, however, loading the bases for Jim Haley. The Biscuits second baseman then bounced a ball to the left side of the infield, and Smokies shortstop Andy Weber bobbled it, allowing Mastrobuoni to score the tying run and make it a 2-2 game.
Faustino Carrera remained in the game in the seventh, walking Christopher Morel and then allowing a double to Andy Weber. After a line out to right, Jordan Brink came out of the bullpen and induced a 6-2 put-out courtesy of Mastrobuoni to keep it a 2-2 game. But then Zach Davis came through with an RBI-single to center to make it a 3-2 game, and the Smokies would add three more runs in the eighth.
Montgomery would continue to fight in the ninth, loading the bases for Chris Betts, who delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to cut the deficit in half at 6-4. But Ethan Roberts finally got Kaleo Johnson to ground out to short to end the game with runners at the corners.
The Butter and Blue will try to bounce back on Friday night when LHP Michael Plassmeyer makes his Double-A debut against RHP Erich Uelman at 6:00 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for the first time since 2019 with a six-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Opening Night presented by Chick-fil-A with a MAX Fireworks Show on Tuesday, May 11.
The rest of the series will include Military Wednesday presented by WOW!
