Jackson Generals News Release

Jackson, TN- The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but fell short as the Birmingham Barons escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Diamond Jaxx before a crowd of 2029 fans at Pringles Park. The Diamond Jaxx lead in the Northern Division drops to 1.5 games over Carolina, who defeated Chattanooga 6-1 at Bell South Park. The Diamond Jaxx have dropped their last four games. With the Barons in front 3-0, closer Bobby Jenks came on in the ninth inning to nail it down for starter Eduardo Villacis (2-4), who shutout the Diamond Jaxx on just three hits in his six innings of work. Felix Pie led off the inning with a walk and scored on a triple to right by Adam Greenberg. After Matt Murton hit a soft grounder to third, Brandon Sing sent Barons centerfielder Chris Young to the wall with a deep fly. Young leaped in the air to make the catch as Greenberg came home on the sacrifice fly that just missed being a two run homer. With the Diamond Jaxx down 3-2 and down to their final out, Buck Coats rapped a single to right. Matt Craig then dumped a single to left-center, placing runners at first and third with two outs. Barons manager Razor Shines replaced Jenks with left-hander Ryan Meaux. Facing Ryan Theriot, Meaux's second pitch went back to the screen, sending Coats home to try and score the tying run. Unfortunately for the Diamond Jaxx, the ball hit the plexiglass part of the backstop, ricocheting the ball directly back to catcher Chris Stewart. Stewart fired the ball to Meaux covering the plate as Meaux tagged out Coats, ending the game. Carmen Pignatiello suffered the loss for the Diamond Jaxx. Pignatiello (4-3) gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits in 7.2 innings of work. He walked two and struck out eight. Game three of the four game series takes place on Sunday afternoon at 1:05. Left-hander Renyel Pinto (0-0 2.50) gets the start for the Diamond Jaxx. Birmingham will counter with lefty Nik Lubisich (6-3 3.21).
