Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
With the largest turnout of the season at Young Arena Thursday, the Waterloo Black Hawks didn't disappoint, scoring a 4-1 win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders during the traditional Thanksgiving game between the teams.
Only the visiting fans among the 3,159 on hand were excited initially as the RoughRiders thought they had the opening goal midway through the first period. However, Hawks goaltender Logan Stein had been knocked out of position. The goal was disallowed, and the period ended scoreless.
Waterloo took the lead on a tally by Brehdan Engum which triggered the Teddy Bear Toss at 2:57. Just a couple of steps inside the blue line at the left point, Engum fired a wrister which flew to the top corner.
Waterloo added two more in the middle frame. Emil Ohrvall followed his own errant shot behind the net with just under five minutes remaining before intermission. From that position, Ohrvall connected with Matej Blumel, whose attempt beat Blake Pietila while the Cedar Rapids goalie was screened by a defender. Vladislav Firstov added one more at 17:17. Looping from the right circle to the slot, Firstov lifted a wrister past Pietila's stick.
Firstov added his second of the game just over a minute into the third period. Back-and-forth passing with Ethan Szmagaj left Firstov in a shooting position near the inside edge of the right circle, and the Russian rookie picked the top corner.
Stein's shutout bid ended with six minutes remaining; Jordan Tonelli swatted in his first USHL goal from between the circles. Stein made 13 saves for the win as the Hawks held Cedar Rapids to six shots or less in each period.
The Hawks and RoughRiders meet again Saturday in Cedar Rapids. Waterloo's next home game is not until December 7th versus the Madison Capitols.
