
Big Second Inning Leads to Victory in Brooklyn

Similar to Wednesday night in Staten Island, the IronBirds used a big second inning to propel them to victory in Brooklyn, 5-2. The Birds scored three runs in the second and never looked back en route to their second straight victory. 1B Doug Bream finished the night with a pair of RBI.
Following a scoreless first inning, the used patience to load the bases. Facing spot starter Matt Koch, 3B Torsten Boss and SS Joel Hutter led the second inning off with a pair of walks. Koch then hit RF Lucas Herbst to load up the bases. Doug Bream brought home the first run of the night with a ground out to SS Phillip Evans. C Sam Kimmel followed up with a sac fly to right field. CF Anthony Vega finally picked up the IronBirds' first hit of the inning with a bloop single to center. Vega's single scored Herbst and gave Aberdeen a three-run advantage.
Doug Bream added to the Birds lead in the fourth when he doubled home Lucas Herbst and Creede Simpson capped off the scoring with a fifth inning single that allowed DH Roderick Bernadina to score from second.
Brooklyn scored an unearned run in the third and plated another in the fifth but that was it for the night.
RHP Juan Guzman started on the hill for Aberdeen and surrendered two runs, one earned, on four hits over 4.1 innings of work. Guzman walked three and struck five. RHP Sander Beck (1-0) picked up the win out the bullpen while RHP Bobby Wilkins notched his first save of the season.
Matt Koch (0-1) got the loss for Brooklyn in his professional debut.
The IronBirds and Cyclones will play game two of their three-game series on Friday night in Brooklyn. LHP Cameron Coffey (0-1, 11.57) will make his second start of the year for the Birds while the Cyclones will send RHP Rainy Lara (1-0, 0.00) to the hill. First pitch from MCU Park is set for 7:00 p.m. Coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network will begin at 6:45 p.m.
