Big Leaguer Hill Now An Outlaw

( Chico, CA. April 26, 2010) The Chico Outlaws, members of the independent professional Golden Baseball League, announced today that they have signed former major league infielder Bobby Hill to a contract and he will report to spring training on May 8th.
Hill, a former Chicago Cub and Pittsburgh Pirate, comes to the Outlaws after spending the 2009 season with the Newark Bears in the independent Atlantic League.
Hill, a California native who grew up in San Jose, CA, played collegiately at the University of Miama (FL), where he was named to the NCAA College World Series All-Tournament team as a shortstop in 1999.
A 2nd round draft choice of the Chicago Cubs in 2000, Hill rose quickly through the Cubs minor league system and made his major league debut in 2002 with Chicago and played four seasons in the major leagues, appearing in 249 games.
In August 2003, Hill was traded from Chicago to Pittsburgh in a deal that involved both INF Aramis Ramirez and OF Kenny Lofton heading to the Northside.
In 2004, he played in a career-high 129 games for the Pirates, hitting .266 with two homeruns and has played shortstop, third base and second base during his big league career.
"Bobby is a great addition to our roster," said Chico Outlaws Manager Garry Templeton. "Adding an infielder of his caliber is going to provide us the experience and versatility we need through the middle of the infield.
Add in the fact he can hit from both sides of the plate and our lineup is going to be a tough one to navigate this season for opposing pitchers."
Hill's signing brings the number of former big leaguers with the Outaws to three as he joins catcher Mike Rose and pitcher Wayne Franklin on the roster.
The Outlaws open up their 6th season on the road on May 21st against the Cimarrrones de Tijuana. The home opener will be held on Wednesday, May 26th against the Tijuana Cimarrones at 7:05pm at Nettleton Stadium. For more information, please visit the team's official website at www.chicooutlaws.com.
