Schaumburg Flyers News Release
FARGO, ND - A Zach Penprase grand slam highlighted a six-run second inning and led the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to an 8-3 win over the Flyers in front of 4,059 at Newman Outdoor Field on Saturday.
Nic Jackson opened the scoring for Fargo with a solo homer in the first off Flyers starter Alain Quijano, but the Flyers answered right back in the second. Jeff Dunbar led off the inning with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home to tie it at one on a Craig Maddox groundout.
The flood gates opened in the bottom half of the second. Randall Simon and Justin Justice knocked back-to-back singles to begin the frame. Alan Rick followed with a one-out single to score Simon, and Quijano walked Kyle Johnson to load the bases. Mike Coles was then hit by a pitch to bring the Fargo lead to 3-1 before Penprase lifted his opposite-field grand slam to make it 7-1.
The Flyers tried to chip away, scoring once in the fifth on a John Toussas double and once in the sixth when Travis Brown doubled and scored on a passed ball. But the 7-3 deficit was as close as the Flyers would get, with Fargo adding another insurance run in the eighth on a Justice single, scoring Jeremiah Piepkorn who had led off with a double.
Dunbar was the only Flyer to record multiple hits, going 3-4 with a run scored. Penprase, Jackson, and Justice each had two hits for the RedHawks, who picked up their first home win of the season against Schaumburg.
Jeff Icenogle (1-0) went six innings in his RedHawks debut, striking out five while allowing three runs on six hits and picking up the win. Quijano was efficient outside of the decisive second inning, allowing seven runs on seven hits over six innings and falling to 3-3 with the loss.
LHP Broc Coffman (6-4, 5.73) returns off the DL for the RedHawks to oppose Flyers RHP Ed Almonte (4-7, 5.24) tomorrow at 1:00.
