Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - A pair of crooked numbers led the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 12-4 series-opening win over the Quad Cities River Bandits in front of a season-high 4,420 fans on the Fourth of July. Each of the nine Kernels starters reached base, seven had at least one hit while four of the first five men in the order provided a multi-hit game as Cedar Rapids plated four in the fifth and seven in the eighth. Cedar Rapids improves to 46-30, 3-8 in the second half with the win.
Quad Cities opened the scoring with back-to-back solo shots in the second. Yunior Severino cut the Kernels' deficit in half with a towering solo home run to left in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 2-1 game.
A two-out rally sparked a four-run fifth for the Kernels. Seth Gray singled home Jake Rucker to tie the game at two, Alerick Soularie drew a walk then a wild pitch put the Kernels' two-three hitters in scoring position. Severino grounded a single to short that was mishandled, allowing both to score. Yunior would cross home three batters later on a wild pitch following a Pat Winkel double and a walk drawn by Wander Javier.
The River Bandits chipped away with a run each in the seventh and eighth.
After a groundout opened the home half of the eighth, the Kernels saw eight straight batters reach to plate seven runs and blow the game wide open. Jeferson Morales singled and scored on a Dylan Neuse double, then Rucker walked before Kyler Fedko smashed a two-run triple off the right field wall. Gray plated Fedko with a single followed by a walk issued to Soularie and a hit-by-pitch of Severino to fill the bases for Winkel. The Kernels' catcher laced a two-run single to right then Javier capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Brad Hanner earned the win with 2.0 frames of scoreless relief while Matt Mullenbach fired a 1-2-3 ninth.
Game two of the series is set for 6:35 p.m. CT on Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium following an off day on Tuesday evening.
