Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD- What happened Monday night to the Gary South Shore RailCats had not happened this season. The Sioux Falls Canaries jumped on a RailCats starter in the first inning and never looked back rolling to a 9-6 win and handing the RailCats their fourth consecutive loss.
The Canaries came out swinging in the home half of the first with the first five reaching off of Morgan Coombs. AJ Kirby-Jones hit a three run homer after Steve Tinoco and Brandon Jones reached on singles and it was 3-0. But the Canaries were just getting started in the game. Chris Duffy would single and Carlos Mendez walked to put runners at first and second. With one out Kevin Dultz doubled off the wall to bring home two and it was 5-0. But the Canaries would add one more with Ty Forney adding an RBI single and the six run six hit inning put the Cats in a huge 6-0 hole they would never recover from. The RailCats had only given up 12 first inning runs all year and it tied for the most they had surrendered all season in any inning.
The Canaries got another homerun from Kirby-Jones in the fourth inning this time a two run shot and it was 8-0 Sioux Falls. They added one more on a Carlos Mendez solo shot to up their lead to 9-0 off of Coombs before the RailCats could answer. In the sixth Josh Romanski hit a solo shot to center to get the RailCats on the board trailing 9-1 off of lefty starter Joe Bircher. Danny Pulfer then tripled and Drew Martinez drove him home for his team leading 30th RBI on a single to right. The RailCats would get an RBI single from Ryan Brocket an inning later to cut the lead to 9-3 but Gary never got any closer.
Kagen Hopkins did work his longest outing of the year going 3.1 in relief holding Sioux Falls scoreless. Joe Bircher (2-4) got the win while Morgan Coombs (3-4) was tagged with the loss. The two team will play game two Tuesday night at 7:05pm with RHP Dustin Crenshaw (4-3)(2.68) going for the RailCats while Sioux Falls will send out ace RHP Ben Moore (4-1)(2.98). The game can be heard on WEFM and online at RAILCATSBASEBALL.COM.
