Ocean State Waves News Release
WAKEFIELD, R.I. - Tyler Bowditch tossed five scoreless innings and Ocean State scored five runs in the first two innings on its way to a 6-1 victory over Plymouth on Tuesday night at Old Mountain Field.
The Waves (21-14) have now won back-to-back games and are 2-2 against the Pilgrims (12-24) this year.
Ocean State used great two-strike hitting to plate four runs in the first. Caden Bailey and Shaun McGraw each drew four-pitch walks and Christian Muscarello followed by lofting an 0-2 pitch into shallow left-center to make it 1-0. Pat Quinn followed by lacing an 0-2 pitch down the right field line for an RBI double. Michael Sherburne capped the big inning as he hammered a first pitch fastball to the base of the left field wall to score two more runs and make it 4-0.
The Waves added to their lead with single runs in the second and sixth. Evan Ocello led off the second with a single to right, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then came home on a Bailey ground out to first. In the sixth, the Waves loaded the bases with two outs and Bailey was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
All the while, the Ocean State pitching staff was twirling a gem. Bowditch faced the minimum over the first four innings and allowed just four baserunners over five scoreless innings. He was helped out in the first as Quinn threw out a runner trying to steal and Muscarello and Reed Gamache spun a 6-4-3 double play after a leadoff single in the third. Bowditch ended his evening by working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth as he struck out a batter and got an infield pop up to end the threat. Jared Habershaw, Nicholas Cooney and Austin Hill then retired the next nine Pilgrims in order before Plymouth plated its only run of the game with a two-out single in the ninth.
Bailey and Sherburne each drove in two runs and Quinn scored twice for the Waves.
Ocean State returns home on Wednesday as it wraps up its season-series with Mystic. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Old Mountain Field.
