RiverCity Rage News Release
St. Charles, MO - The United Indoor Football League announced their end of season awards today. RiverCity Rage linebacker, Joe Bevis, was named the league's "Defensive Player of the Year." The fourth-year starter led the UIF in solo tackles (73), assists (72) and total tackles (109) giving him a 'tackling triple crown.' His 109 total was an unbelievable 22.5 more than his closest competitor. His head coach, Ken Stills, says that preparation, as well as talent, make Bevis the best defender in the league.
"Joe watches as much film as anyone in the league," said Stills. "He is the most prepared player I have ever seen. He is our coach on the field. Joe has a great idea of what the other team is going to do before they break the huddle. If he doesn't know then he still has the athletic ability to react to the play and be at the ball before everyone else. He is the main reason that we are such a good second half team. He sees what our opponent has been doing for two quarters and makes the necessary adjustments at halftime. For a linebacker to lead the league in tackles, with a league that relies so much on the passing game, makes this award all the more impressive."
In addition to his 109 tackles, Bevis, a native of Edwardsville, IL, also tallied 12.5 tackles for loss (8th in the league) and 1.5 sacks while also breaking up three passes, forcing three fumbles (1st in the league), blocking a kick and recording a safety. For good measure, the University of Illinois alum also had two rushing touchdowns on offense.
Bevis led a Rage defense that finished the regular season in the top four in several categories: scoring defense (3rd, allowing 34.3 points per game), pass defense (2nd, allowing 141.2 yards per game), turnover margin (3rd, +5), rushing defense (4th, allowing 69.9 yards per game) and total defense (3rd, allowing 211.2 yards per game).
"I always want to make the tackle," said Bevis. "If I can't get it myself, I want to set up one of my teammates to get the hit. I watch as much film as possible. I watch for certain tendencies, especially in regards to down and distance. I want to know what they're going to do so I can be there before the play has a chance to develop. This award means a lot to me but I also have to give credit to my teammates and coaches who have made me a better player this season. I feel like the best is still yet to come with this team. We could be good for a long time here."
Come watch Bevis and the rest of his team in action as the Rage host the Sioux City Bandits in round one of the UIF playoffs this Saturday night, June 21st. Tickets are available right now and the prices could not be better. Front Row seats $10, Lower Level for $8 and Upper Level for just $5.
