Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-3 Wednesday night, in front of 3,175 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center.
Jeff Bes picked up his fourth hat trick of the season, and second against the Rayz to send the Bucks to their third straight win. Laredo improves their overall record to 36-16-3 (75 points). The win enabled Laredo to extend their lead over Arizona to 12 points for the number one seed in the Southern Conference playoffs.
The Bucks came out and took an early lead just 37 seconds in the game. Adam Rivet sent a frozen rope pass from the left point to Bes at the bottom of the right circle, Bes then sent a one-timer past Rayz goaltender Jason Tapp. Bes picked up his 40th goal of the season, setting a new career high in single season goals. Rivet picked up his 26th assist of the year.
The Rayz came back and tied the game at the 5:21 mark of the first period, when Nick Lindberg snuck past the Bucks defense to the left circle and sent a slap shot past Bucks goaltender Dustin Traylen. It was Lindberg's ninth goal of the campaign.
Both special teams units were busy in the first period, with the Bucks going 0-4 and the Rayz going 0-2 with the man advantage.
Laredo outshot Corpus in the first 20 minutes 14-6.
The Rayz (17-29-6) took a 2-1 lead just 1:57 into the middle period. Jay Latulippe snuck the puck in from the left side of the crease past Traylen. It was Latulippe's 10th goal of the season.
Laredo tied the game at 2-2 less than two minutes later at the 3:45 mark, when Bes took a loose puck at the bottom of the right circle, and sent a back-hander by Tapp. It was Bes' second goal of the night, and 42nd of the season. Bes has now scored a goal in seven of his last eight games.
The Bucks (20-6-1 at home) took a 3-2 lead at the 15:13 mark of the period, when Steve Simoes sent a laser pass from behind the Rayz net to Chris Korchinski at the left side of the slot. Korchinski sent a rocket shot past Tapp. It was Korchinski's 20th goal of the season, and his 100th career point. Simoes, who was playing his first game back from the IR, and Alex Goupil picked up assists on Korchinski's goal.
Laredo outshot Corpus in the second period 16-9.
The Bucks would take a 4-2 lead just 1:40 into the third period as Alex Goupil scored from the right side of the crease past Tapp off of a beautiful feed from Korchinski. Laredo is 6-1 since acquiring Goupil at the trading deadline.
Corpus would cut the Laredo lead to 4-3 with just 2:04 left, when Brent Howarth scored with an extra attacker for the Rayz. Howarth took a pass at the bottom of the right circle past Traylen.
With 1:38 left the Rayz went on a power-play, and pulled Tapp to gain a six on four man advantage to try and tie the game. Traylen set aside a couple of key chances by Corpus.
With eight seconds left Bes took the loose puck at center ice and shot it in to achieve the hat trick. Bes now leads the league with 91 points (42-49=91). Bes' 42 goals are three shy of tying former line mate Chris Grenville for most goals in a season with 45.
Traylen picked up his 21st win of the season, as he set aside 19 of 22 Rayz shots, while Tapp took the loss as he stopped 40 of 44 Rayz attempts.

Wednesday morning the Bucks placed team captain Serge Dube on the 14-day IR with an upper body injury. Steve Simoes was activated from the IR as well Wednesday morning.
Dube's string of bad luck started when he missed the Bucks February 8th and 9th games in Austin with a stomach virus. Dube has been playing through the pain of the injury in Laredo's last six games, with his time on the ice cut down considerably.
On the season Dube is seventh in the CHL in defenseman scoring (9-34=43).
