Bend Elks run out of gas, fall to Corvallis Knights 5-3
June 27, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
The Bend Elks answered the Corvallis Knights run for run until the top of the 7th inning, where the Knights scored two runs to pull away from Bend 5-3 on Wednesday.
For the Elks, Clay Gartner got the start and earned a no decision for the night, going 4 and 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out three. Clay was relieved by Adam Grantham from Arkansas State, who entered the game with runners on the corners with two outs, and escaped the jam to keep the game tied at two three through 5.
Unfortunately for Grantham, he was charged with the loss on the night as in the top of the 7th inning, Grant Melker doubled and Blake Drake walked to chase Adam from the game. Xavier Borde came on in relief for the Elks, and the first hitter he faced, Nate Blackham, delivered a 2 run single to put the 4th and 5th runs across the plate to give the Knights the winning runs.
At the plate for the Elks (13-7), Cullen O'Dwyer from Arizona State University lead the charge by going 2-4 with a solo home run and scoring twice in the losing effort.
The rubber match of the 3 game series will take place Thursday between the Elks and the Knights on Bark in the Park Night, presented by the Humane Society of Central Oregon. Fans can bring their K-9 friends out to the ballpark to enjoy the game at Vince Genna Stadium. First pitch Thursday scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
