
Bend Elks Coming to Town, Knights Return to Goss July 29

Your Corvallis Knights return to Goss Stadium on Tuesday, July 29. They face their long-time division rival Bend in a pivotal three-game home series. It's a key matchup as Corvallis (25-14) leads Bend (24-15) by only one game in the South. Both teams are playing great baseball with the Knights capturing their last six series and winning 14 of their last 18 WCL games. Meanwhile, Bend has gone 22-8 over its last 30 games after starting the season 2-7.
Tuesday is United Way Knight of Caring. Wednesday is $1,000 Kids Dash for Cash presented by Dr. Curtis E. Trammell. And Thursday's finale is Stahlbush Island Farms Hawaiian Night, and of course a Block 15 Thursday and $1 Hot Dog Night. All three games start at 6:40 pm. Gates open at 6 pm. Corvallis is traveling by ferry to beautiful Victoria, BC today. This evening they play the HarbourCats, the first of three games at Royal Athletic Park concluding with an afternoon tilt on Sunday. Jackson Lockwood of Portland is the Knights' probable starting pitcher for tonight. Jackson was slated to start the WCL All-Star Game this past Monday, but unfortunately the league's midsummer classic was cancelled due to rain. Former Knight Gabe Clark of OSU of Victoria won the WCL All-Star Game Home Run Derby. Catch all the action on KEJO 1240 AM. The voice of the Knights, Alex Kuhn, calls all the action. First pitch is 7:11 pm.
Elks/Knights series preview
Two of the best teams in the WCL are set to do battle next week at Goss Stadium (July 29-31). Bend features Oregon State pitcher Jake Thompson (3-1, 3.03, 6 starts) and Beavers' slugger Billy King (.320, 1 HR, 20 RBI). Their offense is led by shortstop Nick Lopez of Creighton who leads the Elks in hitting with a .348 batting average and runs scored with 29. Arizona State outfielders Jake Peevyhouse (.316, 2 HR, 14 RBI) and Trever Allen (.324, 3 HR, 17 RBI) team with King, Lopez and Seattle's Brock Carpenter (.346, 9 doubles, 2 HR, 22 RBI) to make Bend the most dangerous offensive club in the WCL. The series features three of the best closers in the league; Corvallis' Brandon Choate of Washington (8 saves, 14 appearances, 0.91 ERA, 2-0, 4 BB/15 K) and Bend's Kevin Sheets of Abilene Christian (8 saves, 14 appearances, 0.74 ERA, 1-0, 2 BB/31 K) and Luis Cohen of Cal State Northridge (5 saves, 14 appearances, 0.88 ERA, 2-0, 3 BB/30 K).
Knights pitching continues improve as the staff has only allowed 14 runs over its last 9 WCL games. UC Riverside frosh Angel Landazuri (3-0, 2.18 ERA) was named WCL Player of the Week for July 14-20. Jackson Lockwood of Portland (6-2, 2.76 ERA) leads the WCL in wins with 6. Dalton Kelly of UC Santa Barbara and Grant Melker of San Diego are swinging hot bats. Kelly leads the club in hitting (.342, 3 HR, 22 RBI) and Melker has recorded four consecutive three hit games to raise his average to .326. Grant also leads the WCL in stolen bases with 16, and leads the Knights in runs scored with 29. Corvallis outfield defense has shined all season and the Knights infield defense is led by shortstop Michael Lucarelli of Portland, first baseman Dalton Kelly and catchers Logan Ice and Dane Lund of Oregon State.
