Bells Complete Weekend Sweep of Elks

June 12, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release

The Bells completed the sweep of the Bend Elks on Sunday afternoon, winning 6-0 to bring their record to 5-4. Collin Maier started on the mound for the Bells and twirled an efficient 6 innings, allowing only 3 hits and no runs while picking up the win.

The scoring started in the bottom of the 3rd inning for the Bells when center fielder Landon Riker continued his hot streak with a single he lined off of the pitcher's foot. After stealing second Riker advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Shane Hanon. In the next at bat a passed ball allowed Riker to cruise home and the Bells had the lead at 1-0.

The Bells would get another run in the 5th. With 2 outs 3B Danny Casals drew a walk, immediately after that LF Elijah Skipps worked an 8 pitch walk, and the Bells had runners on 1st and 2nd. A wild pitch allowed both Casals and Skipps to move up and the Elk's catcher compounded the error by throwing the ball into center field trying to catch Skipps at second, allowing Casals to score. Another walk from Elk's starter Ryan Ward forced him out of the game and the Bells led 2-0 after 5.

The Bells did some real damage in the bottom of the 6th to put the game out of reach for the Elks. The rally started harmlessly enough with a walk to DH Matt Ruff and after a sac bunt from C Matt DiLeo, Landon Riker lined a single to left giving the Bells runners on the corners. After Hanon got hit by a pitch to load the bases Gunnar Schubert hit a ball in the 6 hole and the Bend shortstop's only option was to try to force out Riker at 3rd, but the 3rd baseman dropped the ball and everybody was safe. Casals and Skipps would then follow with RBI singles making the score 5-0. Finally, Jake Vieth would groundout to drive in the final run of the inning and the Bells ended the 6th with a 4 on the board giving them a 6-0 lead that they would not relinquish.

Joey Matulovich came in to start the 7th for the Bells and was perfect in his three innings of relief, striking out 3. Those three perfect innings lower Matulovich's ERA to 1.12 in 8 innings this year.

The Bells take the field again on Two Dollar Tuesday June 14th for a non-league game against the Everett Merchants at 7:05. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:35 on 930 AM KBAI with Tom Prizeman. To purchase tickets visit http://bellinghambells.com/home/ or call (367) 527-1035.
