Behind Pineda, Jaxx Even Series with Mudcats

ZEBULON, NC. (May 27, 2010) - The Diamond Jaxx (24-22) turned the tables on the Carolina Mudcats (22-25) on Thursday night by winning 7-4. It was the Mudcats that struggled with runners in scoring position, 2-for-17 and strading 10 base runners. The Jaxx did strand 12 but were 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position. The win snaps a three-game losing streak. The Jaxx even the series at one each and are now back to within 3 ½ games of first place Tennessee in the Southern League North.

Michael Pineda (4-1) got the win and fired six strong innings for West Tenn allowing just two earned runs on five hits. Pineda struck out five and walked two. In seven of Michael's starts he has gone at least six frames. Taking the loss for the Mudcats is Alexander Smit (1-3). Smit left after just 4 2/3 on the hill and giving up four runs. Josh Fields (S, 3) earned his third save in four chance by firing a scoreless ninth inning.

The two, three and four spots in the Jaxx lineup, Peguero, Liddi and Limonta combined for six of the seven D-Jaxx RBI's in the game. None recorded multi-hit games though. Kuo Hui Lo recorded his first three-hit game of the year finishing 3-for-5 with a runs scored. Scott Savastano and Jose Yepez had two-hit performances. Mike Castanzo was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Carolina.

A scary moment in the game came in the top of the second inning. Diamond Jaxx starting left fielder, Nate Tenbrink was struck in the head by a pitch from Alexander Smit and was taken via ambulance from the field to the local hospital. Tenbrink was conscience when he was taken off. Tenbrink was released from the hospital on Thursday night.

Carolina got on the scoreboard first again Thursday with three runs in the fourth. Mike Costanzo doubled off the centerfield wall to score Jake Kahaulelio and Sean Henry. Brandon Yarbrough drove in Costanzo with a single to put the Mudcats on top 3-0.

The Jaxx answered the Mudcats in the top of the fifth inning by scoring four runs. Carlos Peguero doubled down the right field line scoring Leury Bonilla and Scott Savastono. Johan Limonta with two outs belted a 2-run homerun bringing in Peguero and giving the Jaxx their first lead of the series, 4-3. The homer for Limonta was his fifth of the year and 30th and 31st RBI.

The Jaxx picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Hometown hero, Dustin Ackley, playing in the state of North Carolina for the first time since playing for UNC delivered an RBI double scoring Jose Yepez. The Jaxx led 5-3 over the Mudcats in the seventh.

West Tenn opened the game up a bit in the top of the eighth when Alex Liddi drove in Kuo Hui Lo and Savastano to go up 7-3. Liddi now has 28 RBI on the year. The Mudcats added a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the final was 7-4.

The Jaxx and Mudcats meet again at 6:15 on Friday night at Five County Stadium. RHP Steven Hensley (5-1, 1.58) will make the start for the Jaxx while RHP Scott Carroll (0-1, 1.80) deals for Carolina.
