Alexandria Beetles News Release
Thunder Bay, ON - Looking to avoid a three game losing streak, the Alexandria Beetles (2-4) rallied to tie the Thunder Bay Border Cats (2-4) at three with a run in the top of the seventh. But four Border Cat runs in the seventh proved to be the difference as the Beetles fell in their road-opener 7-3.
Mathew Dietman (0-1) took the loss in relief for Alexandria as the Beetles blew another early game lead, striking out 14 times, the last seven looking, against Coley Bruns (1-1) and a trio of Thunder Bay relievers.
Johnny Tolson was 3-5 and David Garcia 3-4 to pace the Beetles offense that has scored just six runs in the last three games while the pitching staff has allowed 27.
Alexandria jumped on the board first with a Josh Carpenter single and Tolson double to drive him in, but after Garcia singled to put two on base with one out, the Beetles couldn't extend the lead.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the third on two singles by Tolson and Garcia and a RBI double by Traetow, but again with two on and one out, couldn't bring home multiple runs in the inning.
Thunder Bay punched one home in the third to halve the lead and then plated two in the fourth on three hits and a wild pitch against Beetle starter Alex Guilford, who went five for the team's longest start of the year.
Erik Nockleby's one-out walk sparked a seventh-inning rally as he advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out and came in to score on a RBI groundout by Carpenter. But the bottom of the seventh saw four Thunder Bay singles and a doubles as the Border Cats clinched their home opener by a 7-3 final.
The two teams return to Subway Field at Port Arthur Stadium for an 11:05 EST tilt.
