New Britain Bees News Release
The New Britain Bees won their first ever extra inning contest on Tuesday night, defeating the Long Island Ducks in 11 innings at New Britain Stadium on a walkoff single by Greg Golson.
The Bees' pitching was fantastic once again, with starter Josh Outman pitching the first six innings of one-run ball for New Britain, striking out five. After allowing a single to Lew Ford, who advanced to second on a wild pitch, first baseman Sean Burroughs singled to drive in the lone Long Island run in the first, but that was all the Bees' pitching staff would allow.
New Britain struck back in the second inning, when Anthony Hewitt slammed a home run over the left field wall to tie the game at one - Hewitt's second home run of the season, and the second home run hit in Bees' history. Ducks' starter John Brownell then held the Bees off the board through the sixth, and the Long Island bullpen kept New Britain off the board through the regulation nine innings, with the Bees stranding 13 runners throughout the night.
However, New Britain struck in the eleventh. After Jonathan Roof singled, he advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was erased trying to advance to third on a ball in the dirt. Steve Carrillo then reached on a walk, and Jonathan Jones singled to shortstop to send Carrillo to third. Golson, who earlier in the night gathered his first hit of the season, looped a ball into right field that fell in front of the Ducks' right fielder Fehlandt Lentini to send the Bees' faithful home happy in the franchise's first extra innings game.
The Bees' bullpen was fantastic in relief of Outman, with Grady Wood, Craig Stem, and Shawn Haviland combining for five perfect innings of relief, striking out five.
