New Britain Bees News Release

(Central Islip, NY)- After a 6-0 loss in the opening game of the doubleheader against the Long Island Ducks snapped the three-game winning streak of the New Britain Bees, the Bees got back on the winning track with a 9-7 win the second half of the twin bill.

For the third time in the last five games, the Bees offense put nine runs up on the scoreboard. The Bees started the scoring early on a Craig Maddox two-run home run in the first inning against right-hander Bruce Kern, his second straight game with a long ball and third straight game with two RBIs. The Bees and Ducks would trade runs over the next several innings, with the Bees leading 5-3 after five innings.

New Britain would explode for four runs in the top half of the sixth thanks to the powerful bat of Jovan Rosa. After two hits and walk with one out, Rosa hit the first ever grand slam in Bees' history off of Ducks' reliever Jarrett Casey, putting the Bees up 9-3. The Bees would hold off a late rally from the Ducks in the ninth to earn the split of the doubleheader.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Bees were shut out for only the third time this season. The Bees did manage seven hits and a walk against league strikeout leader Jack Snodgrass but were unable to put any runs on the board in the seven inning contest. While Josh Zeid pitched a complete game in the loss, the right-hander surrendered six runs (five earned) to the Ducks, who were lead by Lew Ford (3-4, 2 RBIs) and Dan Lyons (2-3, 2 RBIs).

The Bees and Ducks wrap up their weekend series from Bethpage Ballpark with a Sunday matinee. Shawn Haviland will toe the rubber for the Bees and will oppose Ducks' right-hander Mark Blackmar as the Bees try to take three of four.
