New Britain Bees News Release

(Lancaster, Penn.) The New Britain Bees split a double header with the Lancaster Barnstormers on Sunday afternoon, taking game two by a score of 2-1 after dropping a 5-4 decision in game one. The Bees' win in game two was the franchise's first win outside the state of Connecticut.

In game one, the Barnstormers jumped out to a two-nothing lead with runs in the second and third innings, including a solo home run by leadoff hitter Travis Witherspoon in the third. However, New Britain would tie the game in the XX inning as James Skelton, who reached base on his league leading 14th walk of the season, stole second and scored on a Jon Jones double. Jones came around to score on a single by Greg Golson, giving him six RBIs on the year to lead the Bees.

New Britain took the lead in the sixth inning of game one, with Kevin Rivers scoring on a sacrifice fly by James Skelton and Jonathan Roof scored from second base on a throwing error on Lancaster catcher Charlie Cutler. However, Bees starter Josh Outman ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth, walking Josh Bell and allowing a base hit to Josh Whitaker. New Britain Close Craig Stem entered the game, but both Bell and Whitaker came across to score the tying runs for the Barnstormers on a Cutler single. After getting the last out of the eighth, Stem allowed a leadoff single to Caleb Gindl in the bottom of the seventh, with Josh Whitaker smacking a walkoff double to deep center to score Gindl and give the Barnstormers the game one win.

In game two, Jon Griffin would account for both of the Bees' runs, doubling in Steve Carrillo and Golson in the third inning to give New Britain a 2-0 lead. That would be enough for Bees' starter Brian Dupra, who tossed 5.1 innings, allowing only one run while setting the Bees' franchise mark for strikeouts in a game with eight. Dupra gave way to Shawn Gilblair in the sixth inning, with Gilblair allowing a hit and a walk before striking out Josh Bell. Grady Wood then entered the game for New Britain, retiring the final four Barnstormers for his first save of the season.
