New Britain Bees News Release

(New Britain, Conn.) New Britain Bees team officials today announced that the team will host a fundraiser for the Special Guerrilla Unit National Monument, in conjunction with the Bristol Veterans Council, at the June 17th game between the Bees and Sugar Land Skeeters. First pitch is scheduled at 6:35 PM, with gates opening at 5:35 PM.

The Special Guerrilla Unit (SGU) National Monument Committee is in the early planning stages of a monument to honor the more than 35,000 Lao/Hmong freedom fighters, who gave their lives while assisting the United States in their campaigns in Southeast Asia. The so-called "Secret Army" consisted of US trained freedom fighters that provided critical support to the United States and their allies. The monument will be built on Downs Street in Bristol on the eastern end of Memorial Boulevard, on land donated by the City of Bristol.

Fans will be greeted by a display of military vehicles and uniformed SGU officers as they arrive at the stadium. Photographs and informational kiosks about the SGU and the "secret army" in Vietnam, which includes a new, 3D rendering of the proposed SGU National Monument, will be displayed throughout the New Britain Stadium concourse during the game. Fans will have the opportunity to make donations to the monument fundraising effort throughout the game.

Donations to the SGU National Monument may be made to the Bristol Veterans Council/SGU National Monument, PO Box 2634, Bristol, CT 06011. For more information, e-mail sgunationalmonumentct@gmail.com. The Bristol Veterans Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
