September 3, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release
The Salt Lake Bees closed out the 2013 regular season by falling to the Reno Aces 17-7 on Monday afternoon. After trailing 1-0 in the first, the Bees scored three runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Luke Carlin and Roberto Lopez and a run-scoring triple by Efren Navarro. Reno answered with four runs in the second on a two-run homer by Tuffy Gosewisch and RBI doubles by Chris Owings and Mike Jacobs. Salt Lake tied the game at 5-5 in the third on a two-out two-run homer by Luis Rodriguez, but the Aces took control by scoring seven unanswered runs to complete a four-game series sweep.
Kevin Johnson (0-1) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered seven runs in two innings on six hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Starter Dontrelle Willis went three innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Chance Ross, Rusty Ryal and Rodriguez led the Bees with two hits and one run batted in each, while John Hester added a pair of hits.
"We made it," said Bees manager Keith Johnson. "These guys showed the penchant, especially in the middle of the season, to go out and win some ballgames, and string some things together, and find ways to win. We're looking forward to taking that into the playoffs."
