Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (8-9-2) snapped their four-game losing streak Sunday afternoon defeating the Bloomington PrairieThunder (8-6-1) by a score of 5-0. The Bees erupted for four goals in the second period and Juliano Pagliero pitched his second shutout of the season making 27 saves. Aaron Lewicki led the Bees with two goals, while Tomas Klempa and Ryan McLeod each registered three points with a goal and two assists each.
The Killer Bees struck first at the 9:04 mark of the first period as the teams skated four a side. Ryan McLeod took a feed from Kirk Medernach and ripped a shot that rang off the post. However with the deflection off the irons PrairieThunder goalie Marco Emond was left out of position and Tomas Klempa was able to one touch the loose puck to the back of the net.
The second period proved to be the difference maker in the game as the Bees erupted for four goals, all in a span of less than ten minutes.
Aaron Lewicki would net a pair of goals starting with a power-play strike at 9:15 of the second. Juliano Pagliero passed the puck from just outside his own crease to Brett Wilson who was on the far side blue line. Wilson and Lewicki came in two-on-none and after the Wilson pass Lewicki would bury it high-glove side.
Lewicki would net his second goal just 45 seconds later after Ryan McLeod found him alone on the back door. Tomas Klempa would continue his hot streak with the secondary assist.
Tyler Lehrke was next to score for the Bees getting at goal at 13:32 from inside the faceoff circle. Lehkre had been knocked to his knees but was still able to fire the puck towards the net and it beat Emond. Ryan McLeod would add the fifth goal of the game for the Bees at 16:01 with Tomas Klempa and Tyler Lehrke picking up the assists.
After the five goals the Bloomington PrairieThunder would pull Marco Emond for Brad Phillips in between the pipes. Phillips started the season in Killer Bees training camp.
In the third period neither team would have many quality chances as the Killer Bees seemed content to just play dump and chase with the five goal lead. The Bees only attempted four shots in third.
The Killer Bees return to the State Farm Arena after the three game road trip this coming weekend taking on the Arizona Sundogs on Friday and Saturday night. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at killerbeehockey.com or calling 956-843-PUCK (7825).
