Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Hidalgo, TX - Don Parsons' four-point performance (1g,3a) Friday night at the Dodge Arena led the Memphis RiverKings to a 5-1 win over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees to end a four-game winless streak and hand the Bees their sixth consecutive loss.
The Killer Bees controlled most of the first period tempo with four power play opportunities, and holding the RiverKings without a shot on goal for the game's first 11-minutes, but it was Memphis grabbing the opening lead. Brad Mueller collected the puck off of a draw in the left-corner and skated to the left post and slammed the puck through the stick of defenseman Sean Gillam and through goaltender Jeff Levy with 3:55 remaining in the period.
The RiverKings penalty kill unit shutdown the Bees power play opportunities in the opening period and took advantage of the Bees penalty kill unit in the second period. Phil Aucoin took advantage of a Gillam tripping violation 8:02 into the period with a power play goal and then Scott English baited Ryan Shmyr into a four-minute minor penalty, leading to a Jeff Cameron power play goal 4:47 later to give the 'Kings a 3-0 lead.
Gillam finally got the Bees on the board 4:14 into the third period, ending a home shutout sequence at 104:14, but not before Ken Goetz tallied an unassisted goal 1:13 into the period. Goetz' tally came as Jason Hawes missed the entire net on a blast from the left-circle and Goetz took the puck off the boards in stride and unleashed a quick shot past Jeff Levy from the left-circle. Don Parsons would complete his four-point performance with a power play goal 6:36 into the period to cap the game's scoring a 5-1.
The six-game losing streak for the Bees is their longest in franchise history and they have been outscored 30-5 in the skid. They look to end their losing streak Saturday night hosting the Southeast Division leading Corpus Christi Rayz.
