Portland Beavers News Release

EDMONTON, Alberta - Jeff Bailey hit a three-run home run and five Edmonton pitchers held Portland to five hits as the Trappers defeated the Beavers 5-1 Monday afternoon to conclude the regular season.

Ron Chiavacci struck out six and gave up a run on just two hits in his final start of the regular season for the Trappers (73-69), who now advance to the Pacific Coast League playoffs against Sacramento. Chiavacci was not part of the decision and worked 5.0 innings before turning it over the bullpen. Tim Drew entered in the sixth and got the win, his fifth of the season. Drew was one of four Edmonton relievers to work an inning in the game.

Mike Bynum fell to 7-12 by allowing four runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work for the Beavers, who wrapped up their third season with a 69-75 record. Bynum gave up a decisive three-run shot to Bailey in the sixth inning and recorded four strikeouts.

Jon Knott went 2-for-3 and scored the Beavers' only run on Donaldo Mendez' RBI groundout in the top of the fifth to tie the game.

The Beavers led the PCL North Division for the majority of the first half of the season and fought back into contention after relinquishing their lead in late June.

"Overall, it was a very good season," Beavers manager Rick Sweet said after Monday's game. "We got off to a big jump and had quite a few changes. But, despite being pretty young, our guys battled all the way until the end."

The Beavers raced out to a franchise-best 19-9 record in the first month of the season and held onto at least a share of first place in the North for all but one day through the first 85 games.

After giving up their division lead on June 30, the Beavers were able to get to within a half-game of the top spot on a few occasions and were as close as a game out as recently as August 25.

"It was an enjoyable season," added Sweet.

Scott Hodges and Randy Knorr each had two hits for Edmonton; both had RBI singles.

NOTES: The Trappers, who were PCL champions a year ago as a Minnesota Twins affiliate, begin the Pacific Conference playoffs Wednesday at TELUS Field against the River Cats, who finished with the league's best record ... the Beavers concluded the season with a 38-34 road record and a 31-41 home record ... four Beavers are expected to be called up to join the San Diego Padres now that the season is over ... Mike Bynum, Khalil Greene, Xavier Nady, and Brandon Villafuerte are expected to join Portland's major league affiliate.
