Buffalo Beauts News Release
STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Buffalo Beauts kicked off their 2018-19 NWHL season in dominant fashion today, shutting out the Connecticut Whale 4-0 at Terry Conners Ice Rink in Connecticut.
The Beauts were led by a pair of last season's rookie standouts in Maddie Elia and Hayley Scamurra, who each scored two goals in the win. Elia ignited the Beauts' hot start with two first period goals in less than three minutes and Scamurra registered a pair of her own in the third period to seal the victory. The local standouts tied for Buffalo's team lead in points last season.
Two of Buffalo's key additions served as catalysts today, as Team USA gold medalists Dani Cameranesi and Nicole Hensley each made an impact in their first game with the Beauts. Hensley stopped all 10 shots she faced to record Buffalo's first shutout of the season and Cameranesi joined her linemates Elia and Scamurra on the scoresheet with two assists. Buffalo's top line of Scamurra, Elia, and Cameranesi combined for a total of eight points in the game.
Despite being held off the scoresheet, two-time NWHL All-Star Kelly Babstock was a standout in her return to Connecticut and recorded a game-high seven shots on goal. Babstock played three professional seasons with the Whale and became the franchise leader in points before signing with the Beauts in June.
The Beauts have now won their last seven regular-season games against the Whale and will look to extend their streak next week when Buffalo hosts Connecticut in its home opener on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Harborcenter. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
