Buffalo Beauts News Release
The Buffalo Beauts polished off back-to-back wins against the Metropolitan Riveters - in their house - with a 2-1 triumph in New Jersey behind Amanda Leveille's 35-save performance and a goal and an assist from their captain Corinne Buie. The Beauts have now won ten games in a row, the Riveters won 11 straight earlier this season.
Buie started the scoring 6:22 into the game when Sarah Casorso's point shot deflected off something or someone and then off the captain before eluding Riveters goaltender Katie Fitzgerald. Buffalo nearly doubled their lead in the opening period but a potential goal was waved off by the referee after they ruled that Colleen Murphy was in the crease illegally.
Last weekend when the two top teams in the league met, Kristin Lewicki could have had three or four goals with all of the scoring chances she had and came away empty. This weekend she would not be denied, and her goal pushed the Beauts lead to 2-0 just 1:39 into the second period as 'Wheels' cashed in on a rebound in front of Fitzgerald's crease.
Both goalies made phenomenal saves throughout the game, and Leveille had some help from Casorso in the crease, as well as her goal posts (twice struck by shots from Alexa Gruschow). The Riveters finally broke through when Rebecca Russo's slap pass fooled everyone and found Madison Packer alone in front of the blue paint at the midway point of the game.
From that point on the game was All About Lev, as she made save after save, including 11 over the final period. The Beauts took their only two penalties of the game in the final frame, but the Riveters were unable to capitalize in an area that they ran wild in during the early parts of the season.
Game Notes: Casorso has points in four straight games now (six assists). The Beauts were credited with 13 blocked shots in the win, led by Sarah Edney's 4. Taylor Accursi led Buffalo with five shots on goal, while the Rivs' Jenny Ryan led all players with nine. The Beauts line of Buie-Lewicki-Jess Jones combined on both goals.
