Boston Pride News Release
The Boston Pride and Connecticut Whale came into Saturday night with third place on the line. Moreover, this particular game honored Denna Laing, a member of the Boston Pride who was tragically injured in the 2015 Outdoor Women's Classic. The Pride played their hearts out in honor of their teammate and ultimately came out on top with a 3-2 victory over the Whale.
The Pride were the first to score, when Jordan Smelker came flying down the right wing, and sent a shot far-side top shelf that beat Whale netminder Sydney Rossman. This was only the beginning of Smelker's incredible night.
The Pride would strike again late in the first period, this time courtesy of Pride captain Jillian Dempsey, who tipped in a pass by Mary Parker to score her team-leading seventh goal of the season. After twenty minutes, the Whale found themselves down by a pair of goals and were determined not to get shut out for their second consecutive game.
At 5:11 of the second period, the Whale broke their four-period scoreless drought. After maintaining possession in the Pride zone, Emily Fluke fired a shot that went over Brittany Ott's shoulder to bring the Whale within one.
At 7:56, the Pride lit the lamp, with Dana Trivigno setting up Smelker in the low slot, who fired a shot far side past Rossman's leg pads to score her second goal of the contest.
The Whale came in back in the third period with fury, peppering Ott repeatedly and commanding the game's momentum for most of the period. With the Pride appearing worn out and scrambling to hold onto their lead, the Whale finally broke through with Cydney Roesler scoring her first goal of the regular season at 14:31. The Pride would ultimately hang on until the sound of the buzzer to win the game and clinch third place in the playoff standings.
The Pride host the Riveters next Saturday, March 10, at Warrior Ice Arena. Meanwhile, the Whale host the Beauts at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford, CT, next Saturday as well.
