Bears Take Five-Game Series In Three

July 16, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears dispatched the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes by a final score of 6-1 Friday night at Yakima County Stadium. Yakima has now claimed the five-game series after wins in each of the first three games.

Starting pitcher gave up a run in the first inning when he hit a batter with a pitch with the bases loaded. That would be the only run scored by the Volcanoes in the game. Kudryk finished with one run allowed in six innings, and at one point he retired 13 straight batters. The lefty earned his first professional win following the quality start Friday.

The Bears offense came to Kudryk's aid in the fourth inning with a tying run off of a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Comerota. Two more runs were driven in during the fifth inning on a single by Carter Bell. Back-to-back doubles by Comerota and Marc Bourgeois, along with back-to-back wild pitches from the Volcanoes reliever, plated two more runs in the sixth. The Bears finished the scoring with a run in the eighth courtesy of a RBI triple from Westley Moss.

Eight of the nine hitters finished with at least one hit, as the Bears tied a season-high for hits in a game with 13. Bell led the way with a 3-for-4 game. Comerota finished 2-for-2, Moss went 2-for-4, and Raul Navarro had a 2-for-5 night.

The Bears bullpen allowed no earned runs for the eighth straight game. Greg Robinson, Sammy De Los Santos, and Mike Blake each pitched a scoreless inning.

The Bears will try for a fourth-straight win Saturday night, when they again play host to the Salem Keizer-Volcanoes. Game time is scheduled for 7:05, but fans should be there early if they want one of the 500 Carlos Gonzalez bobbleheads that will be given away to the first fans through the gates. Right-handed pitchers Alex Capaul of the Bears and Kendry Flores are expected to start the game.
