
Bears storm Lancaster in make-up game

NEWARK, NJ - September 18, 2006 - Newark Bears second baseman Matt Brunson, first baseman Victor Rodriguez, and catcher Victor Valencia each had three hits to lead the Bears past the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-4 Monday evening in a make-up game from a rained out game earlier in the month at Clipper Magazine Stadium. In the game, the Bears scored eight of the nine runs with two outs, and with the win they snapped their five game losing streak.
The Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double by Rodriguez in the first inning, however Barnstormers second baseman Bernie Gonzalez gave Lancaster a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run for his seventh of the season.
Trailing 2-1, Bears right-fielder Al Benjamin hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, his 14th of the season, to tie the game at 2, and a two-run double in the fifth inning to put the Bears ahead 4-2. Newark would add three runs in the top of the sixth when designated hitter Will Pennyfeather hit a two-run double to left field, and Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to give Newark a 7-2 edge. Benjamin finished the game 2-for-5 with one run scored and three RBI
Gonzalez ended the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI for the Barnstormers, and center-fielder Reggie Taylor went 2-for-5 including a solo home run, his 19th of the season, in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 7-3.
Pat Daneker (5-9) earned his first victory since July 4 allowing four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings striking out three, while Scott Sobkowiak (8-7) suffers the loss with five innings pitch yielding four runs, two earned, on nine hits striking out eight.
The Newark Bears begin a two-game home stand to close out the 2006 home schedule with the Camden Riversharks, beginning Wednesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Gates open at 6:05 pm to Newark City Employee Appreciation Night.
