Bears squeeze by Blue Crabs, 11-10

The Newark Bears defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 11-10 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark, NJ.

The Bears were out of the gate early, putting ten runs on the board in the first three innings of the game. For the second day in a row, the Bears launched multiple home runs off the bats of Felix Martinez, Jacque Jones, Salomon Manriquez and Andres Perez, who crushed a grand slam homer in the second inning.

Southern Maryland caught up to the Bears in the seventh and eighth, for a combined seven runs over two frames. Notably, Travis Garcia went four for four, including his twelfth home run of the season in the top of the first inning. The Crabs gathered their ten runs off of fifteen hits.

Pitching in his first game as a Newark Bear, Klye Kobernus recorded the win, pitching for five innings, striking out three and allowing only three earned runs. Armando Benitez took the save, his sixth this season.

The win improves Newark's record to 33-28, with nine games to go in the first half of the season.
