Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, May 30-The Newark Bears of baseball's Atlantic League announced today two player transactions. The Bears signed right-handed pitcher Elvin Nina and released right-handed pitcher Steve Gagliano.
Nina, a 27 year-old from Tempe, Arizona, spent the past two-plus seasons pitching at the triple-A level in the Anaheim Angels organization. Last year he appeared in 26 games, making 15 starts, and he posted a 5-9 record and a 4.64 ERA. In 2001 Nina won a career-high 10 games for Salt Lake City, ranking 3rd in the Pacific Coast League by making 28 starts.
"We are very excited about adding Elvin to our pitching staff," said Bears general manager Chris Bryan. "He brings triple-A experience, which is invaluable at this level of baseball, and he will give a shot in the arm to our starting rotation."
Nina will join the team on Saturday, in time for that night's game against the Atlantic City Surf.
Gagliano, who was a member of the Bears 2002 Atlantic League championship-winning team, was 0-3 this season with a 5.71 ERA in 6 games (4 starts).
