Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, May 30-The Newark Bears scored three runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning, but left the tying run on second base and lost to the Atlantic City Surf, 6-5, Saturday night at Riverfront Stadium.

With the Bears trailing 6-2, Al Benjamin led off the 9th inning with his first home run of the season. Two batters later, Rickey Henderson delivered and RBI double. However Surf shortstop Raul Marval made a terrific running catch of Tom Hage's pop fly for the first out. Bryan Britt's ground out scored another run to make the score, 6-5, but Francisco Lebron grounded out to third base for the game's final out.

Newark had built a 2-1 lead on a pair of solo home runs by Wil Quintana, his 3rd and 4th of the season, in the 4th and 6th innings, but Manny Barrios (0-1) let the lead slip away in the 7th inning. The Surf scored four times in the fateful seventh, three on Chad Gambill's 2nd home run of the season.

Tom Stepka started for the Bears and tossed 6.1 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits. He struck out a season-high 6 batters, but received a no-decision despite leaving the game with the lead.

Andy High (3-1) picked up the win for Atlantic City. He pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits for his third straight victory.

The Bears (13-14), who have lost four in a row and are now one game under .500 on the season, will host the Surf (14-13) Saturday night at 6:05 PM in the finale of this three-game series. Rolando Viera (0-1) starts for the Bears and Brian Williams (1-0) pitches for the Surf.
